Fitzpatrick Brothers Power Within One Shot of Zurich Classic Lead

English siblings Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick stormed into contention at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, firing a joint-best round of the day to close within one shot of the lead.

The brothers carded a seven-under 65 in Friday's foursomes format, featuring an eagle and six birdies against a lone bogey, to reach 15 under par. They sit in a three-way tie for second, behind American pair Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, who lead at 16 under after two rounds.

The Fitzpatricks entered the day six shots back following a 64 in Thursday's four-ball, but their sharp alternate-shot display vaulted them up the leaderboard at TPC Louisiana.

Matt Fitzpatrick, 31, has been in blistering form this season, climbing to world number three after wins at the Valspar Championship and a play-off victory over Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage. Younger brother Alex, 27, claimed his maiden DP World Tour title at the Hero Indian Open in March.

"Playing here as a family has been great for us, not seeing each other that much in the year," Alex said.

The English duo share second place with American teams Davis Thompson and Austin Eckroat, and Billy Horschel and Tom Hoge. Six other teams are just two shots back on 14 under.

Other English players in the mix include Aaron Rai (paired with Sahith Theegala) at 12 under, and the duos of Matt Wallace and Marco Penge, plus John Parry and Dan Brown, both at 11 under.

The cut fell at 10 under, with the top 33 teams and ties advancing. Irish star Shane Lowry and American five-time major winner Brooks Koepka missed the cut by one shot after rounds of 66 and 69.
