From Bullies to Pushovers: Newcastle's Identity Crisis Under Howe

Newcastle United have lost the edge that once made them a feared opponent, as they prepare to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Manager Eddie Howe admits his side have become too easy to beat, a far cry from the team that once ruffled feathers in north London.

In January 2023, a goalless draw against Arsenal was hailed as a moral victory. Newcastle were dogged, determined, and unafraid to disrupt their hosts. Mikel Arteta noted, "They haven't played against any team like this." Howe himself declared, "We're not here to be popular and get other teams to like us - we're here to compete."

Fast forward to now, and Newcastle languish in 14th place. The intensity has faded. After a promising run that included a win over Manchester United with 10 men, a rare away victory at Chelsea, and nearly beating Barcelona, the team has suffered a series of damaging defeats, including a 2-1 home loss to a surging Bournemouth.

"Players need to take responsibility," Howe said recently. But the root cause goes deeper. Newcastle have lost their identity as the league's "bullies," becoming too nice and predictable. As they return to the scene of that famous stalemate, the question is whether they can rediscover their bite before it's too late.
