Gaza Holds Historic Municipal Elections After 21-Year Hiatus

Palestinians in Gaza headed to the polls on Saturday for the first municipal elections in 21 years. Around 70,000 registered voters cast their ballots in a vote seen as a rare democratic exercise in the blockaded enclave.

The elections, which were delayed for decades due to political divisions and conflict, are expected to reshape local governance. Candidates representing various factions, including Hamas and Fatah, competed for seats on municipal councils.

Residents expressed hope that the vote would bring much-needed reform and improve basic services like water and electricity, which have been severely affected by years of blockade and repeated wars.

"This is a chance for change," said one voter outside a polling station in Gaza City. "We need leaders who can fix our daily problems."

Observers noted that the turnout reflected the public's desire for accountability, though challenges remain, including restrictions on movement and a fragmented political landscape. The elections are seen as a small step toward reconciliation between rival Palestinian factions.
