Epic Games and Google have jointly withdrawn their attempt to retroactively settle the lawsuit that is reshaping Android's app ecosystem. As a result, third-party app stores will start appearing within Google Play starting next week, marking a major shift in how Android users can discover and install apps.

The move follows a prolonged legal dispute that began in 2020, when Epic introduced its own payment system in Fortnite, leading to its removal from Google Play. The case centered on Google's control over app distribution and payments, with Epic arguing that the company's practices were anticompetitive.

Under the new arrangement, competing app stores — including Epic's own store — will be accessible through Google Play, effectively ending Google's monopoly on Android app distribution. This change promises to give developers more choices and potentially lower fees.

Both companies released statements signaling their readiness to move forward. 'This resolution opens the door to a more open Android ecosystem,' said an Epic spokesperson. Google acknowledged the change but emphasized its commitment to user safety and security.

The first third-party app stores are expected to go live next week, with more to follow. Analysts predict this could lead to lower commission rates and increased innovation in the app market.
