Musk's Missteps: How the Billionaire Squandered His Political Influence

This week's Senate vote on the SAVE America Act, which would require identification for voter registration nationwide, ended in a predictable defeat. Conservative hopes of testing the filibuster were dashed, as it became clear that the bill lacks even 50 Republican votes. Yet the bill drew outsized attention, partly due to Donald Trump's election-fraud rhetoric, but also thanks to Elon Musk's vocal advocacy.

Since the dissolution of his Department of Government Efficiency and his brief third-party venture, Musk has made the SAVE America Act his top political priority, judging by his social media focus. But like his previous efficiency push, this effort shows a pattern: the world's most successful businessman engaging in politics ineffectively.

In the early days of Trump's second term, Musk was uniquely positioned to shape policy. He brought his own fame, fortune, and base, independent of Trump. His social platform gave him unrivaled influence over national conversation, and his anti-woke stance earned him credibility with grassroots conservatives. This leverage seemed ideal for advancing his expertise in space, technology, and deregulation, and perhaps even countering Trump's protectionist trade policies.

Instead, Musk's political capital has been squandered. His focus on voter ID—a niche priority—illustrates a broader failure to capitalize on his potential. As Trump's administration faces growing problems, Musk's missteps stand out as a cautionary tale of how even the most powerful influencers can miss their moment.
