Brexit Reemerges as Flashpoint in Labour Leadership Turmoil

The UK's relationship with the European Union is back at the center of political debate as jostling for the Labour leadership intensifies, with key figures—including former Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham—openly calling for closer ties and even eventual reentry.

In his first public appearance since resigning, Streeting described Brexit as "a catastrophic mistake" and argued that the UK must seek a "new special relationship with the EU," ultimately aiming for full membership once a fresh mandate is secured. Speaking at the Progress Conference, he criticized Labour's earlier caution on the issue, saying the party had been "too afraid of what the Tories might say."

Conservative Party Chairman Kevin Hollinrake swiftly condemned Streeting's remarks, accusing Labour of "relitigating Brexit" while the government should focus on the cost of living and public services.

Meanwhile, Andy Burnham, who is campaigning in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, echoed similar sentiments, stating that "in the long-term there is a case for" rejoining the EU, though he stressed he is not advocating that in the immediate campaign. Reform UK, which has strong support in the area, is seeking to leverage Burnham's past pro-EU comments against him, noting that 65% of Makerfield voters backed Brexit.

The by-election, expected on 18 June, could serve as a springboard for a Labour leadership challenge, with both Streeting and Burnham positioning themselves as potential contenders.

The Liberal Democrats and Greens have also weighed in, with the Lib Dems insisting that "without a customs union, we won't see the growth we desperately need," and the Greens reiterating their support for full EU membership as soon as political will allows.

As the debate reignites, Brexit remains a defining fault line in UK politics, shaping not only party strategies but also the future direction of the country.
